Smiling because I can

In October 2007, I had just completed my fourth marathon in Kelowna, British Columbia, in 3:43, which was so close to a BQ I could almost taste it! I didn’t feel great throughout the whole training program, but blamed it on being a single parent and aging. Low and behold, by December 2007, I was in the hospital and diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Type 1 diabetes (I’m a late bloomer).

StaceyMortensonInstantly I was insulin dependent and dealing with blood sugar management. My life was turned upside down, and a diabetes nurse told me I’d probably not run any more marathons. That was my fuel to keep going!!! In September 2008, I ran my first marathon with T1; a BQ at the Queen City marathon! My first Boston was 2009. I then qualified again to have the marathon inferno experience of Boston 2012.

Until the bombs went off in 2013, I wasn’t planning to go back, but afterwards, I couldn’t help myself. I ran one more BQ, this time for 2014, hoping the third time’s the charm! Running with insulin and all of the gear that goes along with being a type 1 diabetic, I should be easy to locate; but you can also spot me by my big grin. I’ll be smiling because I can do it! And because I love Boston!!
